Unit 5: Spiritual, Mental & Physical Wellness

For me, the connection between the mind and body is very direct. The way we think directly impacts the ways in which our bodies function. As someone with auto-immune disease, I can draw direct correlations between physical responses in my body and the amount of stress I'm experiencing. When I'm under stress, my muscles hurt and retain more tension, inflammatory responses in my body increase, and I experience fatigue. Exercises that calm the mind and relieve stress cause improvement in my physical symptoms. The inverse seems true as well. Increased physical wellness seems to help reduce stress.

The struggle for me is the connection to spiritual wellness. I've never been spiritual or religious and so the idea of connecting to some universal belief or knowledge is, well, difficult to connect with, lol. That's not to say that I'm closed to the idea but I do find it very difficult to make sense of it's direct impact to my physical and mental wellness.
